A year on: Britnell reflects

Finding her feet: South West Coast MP Roma Britnell reflects on her first year in the role and says she is not going anywhere. Mrs Britnell says she had big boots to fill taking over from former Premier Denis Napthine.South West Coast MP Roma Britnell says she faced a serious challenge when she was elected to take over the seat from former Premier Denis Napthine just over a year ago.
Nanjing Night Net

“I knew they were very big shoes that I had to fill,” Mrs Britnell said.

The MP said she hashad a tough year – finding her feet while dealing with issues including the dairy crisis, uncertainty about the future of Warrnambool’s Deakin University campus, concerns about Warrnambool’s coast guard vessel, the threat of losing Portland’s Alcoa aluminium smelter as well as deteriorating roads andinefficient trains.

“The issues just kept coming thick and fast over this past 12 months,” Mrs Britnell said.

Mrs Britnell said one of the most meaningful moments for her as a leader was being able to step in to advocate on behalf of a family that was close to losing their foster son.

She appealed directly to the relevant minister to revisit the case and was able to have a decision reversed.

Mrs Britnell said it hadbeen difficultbeing in opposition trying togetting action taken on the poor state of the region’s roads.

“Being in opposition means I don’t have the purse strings, and it’s very frustrating when I see things such as our roads falling apart,” she said.

“It’s not about politics. This is a real need, our roads are 50 years old and it is simply just time to invest in a future network.

“When it’s obvious thatlives are at risk it’s beyond politics.”

Mrs Britnell said the region was uniquely placed to thrive as demand for produce grew on the global market.

“Wedon’t have the urban encroachment that Gippsland has andwe don’t have the water challengesthe north have.

“We have underground water, we have natural rainfall, we have a strong agricultural economy and we have a strong need for food that is growing across the world.

“Weare positioned better than anywhere else in Victoria–I am very excited to be in this role knowing that agriculture forms the foundation of our economy and opportunity.

“The world is our oyster.”

The MP said she intended to stick with the role long-term.

“If my community think I’m doing a good enough job, then Iwill continue to work as hard as I possibly can to keep them understanding that I’m committed,” Mrs Britnell said.

“I will be here as long as I possibly can be.

“I’ve never been someone to start something and not finish it and if I’mnot here in years to come it will be because I’ve failed, not because I’ve decided to leave.”

Airport report is lacking: Macarthur MP

Macarthur MP Dr Mike Freelander (Labor) has criticised Western Sydney Airport’sfinalised environmental impact statement (EIS), labelling it “incomplete” and a “box-ticking exercise”.
Nanjing Night Net

The report for the Badgerys Creek airport was presented to federal environment minister Josh Frydenberg at the weekend, but Dr Freelander believes it did not appropriately cover factors such as noise and air pollution.

The federal MP is calling on residents to read through the EIS –available at Campbelltown and Camden libraries and the airport’s website –and contact him with their concerns.

He will then take those concerns to Mr Frydenberg to present the community’s view.

“The EIS does not really address some important points,” Dr Freelander said.

“As the flight paths are not decided the report cannot provide appropriate comment, which is pretty bad.

“The EIS does not address air quality issues going forward.”

Dr Freelander does not believe the statement should have been handed on to the environment minister in its current state.

“It’s just a hand off, a box ticking exercise without looking into a lot of issues,” he said.

Dr Freelander said he was not against the airport’s construction and was in fact looking forward to seeing Badgerys Creek become a hub for local jobs, but could not ignore the shortcomings in the EIS.

“I’m in favour of the airport, it’s a good opportunity for local people to find work,” he said.

“We just need to get it right. This is an enormous opportunity to address the environmental issues and make sure we start down the right path.”

The Western Sydney Airport EIS is a five-volume, more than 1000-page document.

Dr Freelander is encouraging residents who feel concerned about any aspects of the EIS to contact his office on4655 7600 or email him [email protected]论坛.
